The character of the material
Microcement is a thin, hand-applied decorative coating system that creates a continuous mineral or concrete-like appearance. Its visual character can range from quietly uniform to more expressive trowel movement.
For a shower, the finish is only one part of the specification. A sound substrate, an approved waterproofing assembly, compatible layers, and the required protective treatment must work together. Product selection follows the conditions of the room.
Warm gray, ivory, sand, or deeper tones can complement your stone, wood, and metal finishes. Choose the color with a sample in the room’s lighting.
Microcement can visually connect shower walls and built-in details. Plan the edges, junctions, fixtures, and required movement joints before the surface is applied.
Decide how much trowel movement you want to see. Review a sample from more than one angle so its texture and sheen work with the intended lighting.
Look closer
A beautiful shower depends on preparation as well as appearance. The selected system determines priming, reinforcement, base coats, finish coats, protective treatment, and curing. A sealer should not be treated as a replacement for the required waterproof substrate.
California Wall Design’s material library includes Concretta and other specialty finishes. We select for the application rather than assuming every decorative plaster is suitable for a wet area. Discuss the walls, floor, bench, niche, and drain details as separate parts of the scope.
Share dimensions, plans, existing conditions, fixture locations, and the intended finish. Identify all wet surfaces.
Develop a sample for color, movement, and sheen, then coordinate it with the chosen fixtures and adjacent materials.
Confirm substrate stability, waterproofing responsibilities, drainage, junctions, and the compatible preparation system before finish work.
Build the specified coating layers and protective treatment. Observe the manufacturer’s cure schedule before use and confirm ongoing care.
A continuous bathroom surface can be achieved through different materials and design approaches. These related images help frame the conversation; they are not presented as additional microcement installations.
Do not assume the decorative coating alone provides the waterproofing. Shower installations require the approved substrate and waterproofing assembly, plus compatible coating layers and protective treatment. Follow the requirements of the exact system being used.
Some systems permit it after suitable preparation, but the tile, substrate, adhesion, movement, and existing waterproofing must be assessed. An overlay is not a remedy for leaks or an unstable surface.
Only where the selected system is approved for those uses. Drainage, slip resistance, junctions, standing water, and maintenance need to be considered separately from the wall finish.
It can have a continuous appearance without a tile grid, but required movement joints and transitions still need to be respected. The design should accommodate the building’s movement and the system’s installation requirements.

Use begins after the selected system’s required curing period. Follow its cleaning and maintenance instructions, use approved cleaners, and ask about renewing the protective treatment when needed. We discuss those requirements as part of planning.
